It's weird thinking people that speak a different language, have thoughts in that language. amirite?

It's futile discussing anything regarding other languages with Americans since no American is bilingual.

On the first day of my French class in 6th grade (I'm American btw) my teacher told this joke:
What do you call someone who speaks three languages? Trilingual.
What do you call someone who speaks two languages? Bilingual.
What do you call someone who speaks one language? American.

And weird to think if you were fluent in two languages you could think in either language...

I want to know if anyone here does this, and if so, what it's like. I'm in the process of learning a second language, and I'm barely forming coherent sentences.

I speak both English and Spanish fluently, but I haven't ever really thought in Spanish without consciously trying to. But I do dream in Spanish occasionally.

I do, I think in french and english. Its pretty much 50/50 :)

My mom lived in Spain for two years after learning Spanish. She said her thoughts and dreams were about 50/50 between English and Spanish.

I don't think thought is in any specific language. It's more something that you sort of feel and use words that you know to express it. That's why you can have a thought and not be able to find a word.

Mind fucked

I rarely think in English, but it is possible to. I can basically switch it up as I am fully bilungual and fluent in English and Afrikaans.
It still saddens me though that the USA is supposed to be this global superpower, yet the majority of the population can only (barely) speak a single language.
