Federalists, which pretty much all influential founding fathers subscribed to with the exception of Jefferson, were actually quite conservative. They really didn't believe in or trust the citizens of America (that's why we have an electoral college) and the only reason we have the Bill of Rights is because they were forced to compromise so the Constitution was passed. Federalists also firmly supported business and industry. It's difficult to say what "conservative" was defined as back in the 18th century, but in many ways the birthers of the nation were.
