+292 It's fun, living in a society where we teach how to avoid being raped, rather than just not to rape. amirite?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Because teaching kids not to rape would be stupid and would just cause people to rape more.

Herp derp. And let's just ask terrorists nicely not to attack us. That should stop them. It's so obvious.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Of course, there have to be douchebags like you.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

People who rape other people aren't going to stop just because someone says, "You know, that's not a very nice thing to do."

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I don't know about that... what if we offer them a piece of candy also?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

You can't predict how people are going to react, so it is better to know how to defend yourself.

It's sort of a known fact that raping someone is not a good thing. Society teaches that by severely punishing rapists. However, there are still people who rape. They're not going to stop just because you tell them it's not a nice thing to do. It's just like with thieves and robbers; everybody knows it's not good to steal, yet there are still people who do it. The best solution is to teach people how to defend themselves if they're ever in either situation.

Not all societies severely punish rape. In fact, in America it's somewhat of a joke. I think, unless I'm reading too much into it, that is what OP is trying to touch on.

They may joke about rape, but rape is still illegal and punishable, even in the United States. In most countries it's punishable by either imprisonment, castration, or even the death penalty. So no. Even if some people do joke about, whenever it actually happens, the rapist is almost always severally punished.

In Saudi Arabia and other countries where women have no rights, rape is just fine. Just saying.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Saudi Arabia follows Islamic laws, which states that punishment for rape is stoning to death, while the victim should not be punished at all. But yes, the legal system in Saudi Arabia is very messed up, and very little of it agrees with Islamic Law.

No ma'am, you are mistaken. Less than half of all rape cases end with the rapist actually serving time, even then compared to some nonviolent crimes, it's a disturbingly short amount of time at that. And, over half of these cases end in dismissal or the rapist being acquitted, usually after they make a case of the victim being either a liar or promiscuous, or both.

I was talking hypothetically. Obviously in real life things are much more complicated. I agree with the point you made that not all rapists get punished and that's really sad. But in the real life, not everything is black and white and judges have to consider the fact that the victim may not really be the victim, especially if the death penalty is involved.

I've never heard of a rapist getting the death penalty in America. But if you take the time to look up some of the cases, especially involving children, it really is black and white. I suppose it's different around the world, I wouldn't know.

I'm not sure about what the punishment is in America, but in some countries the death penalty applies. And yes, some cases do appear to be really black and white, but there are two sides to every story. I'm not saying I agree with rape or that rapists shouldn't be punished (because I firmly believe they should), but you some times have to take in consideration that the 'victim' isn't being completely honest. Of course this isn't always the case, especially involving children, but the judge or lawyer still has to think about it and consider the possibility. I've never studied law or crime cases, but I think they're is always more below the surface then what we, the public, see, which is why many cases take so long to solve.
