+183 It's funny how so many seniors change their Facebook names to avoid being found by snooping colleges, amirite?

No person I have ever known that changed their name on facebook didn't do it so colleges wouldn't find them. In fact, 90 percent of the people I know actively tell colleges who they are. You know, some bs about have a career and whatnot.

Well, it depends if the people you know are aware that some colleges will search them on fb trying to find some extra info about them outside of their app. If they find some unsavory things, it can actually hurt your app. Of course seniors will elite about all the good they've done in their app, of course they won't include the fact that they curse a lot or like going to crazy parties with underage drinking. If your profile is not private, colleges can find that stuff out. My advice to them would be to make their picture something that is nice, and if they don't want colleges factoring the way they look or whatever, then they can put a picture of a flower or something. Some people are paranoid.

I'm not saying it doesn't happen, I'm just saying I don't know anybody who did it. I do like to explain why I disagree with something.

okay, that's fair, but when you said the bit about 90 percent of people actively telling colleges who they are, I felt that people who change their names could be apart of the 90 percent. They just don't wish to tell colleges more about who they are through fb, especially if they've got something to hide. At my school, it's a big thing. I guess the guidance counselors and mentors tried to scare everyone about that.

Yeah I have never really heard anything about that regarding schools. I have heard of that regarding jobs though.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Oh, I didn't even think about it in regard to jobs. People should be careful what they put on the internet always.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Why would they change their names when they can just make their profile private?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

There are ways to get around that.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Care to elaborate?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Just because your profile is private, doesn't mean it really is. The police can have access to your profile. College admissions officers and even prospective employers can look at them too.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Oh, okay, but how is that legal? I understand the police doing that, but not the others.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Technically they don't 'hack' into your account. You're using the term too losely. They just get past blocks so your profile is accessible to them.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

that's what I said, but someone said they can hack into your account, lol, but would colleges really stoop that low?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

90% of peoples' Facebooks are extremely private without mutual friends and even with. I doubt colleges are going to hack into every student's FB

by Anonymous 12 years ago

It would be so time consuming for them and they have thousands of applicants.
