Maybe he put them in a metal box and fed them splinters through a slot in the roof? Or soaked a wooden box in vinegar or something to make it taste bad?

Magic~ Or maybe the termites evolved over time to what they are today, and back then the termites had different characteristics and whatnot. I don't know if this makes sense, but it's just a guess o_o
