+286 All horror movies have one thing in common: a lack of common sense, amirite?

All the new horror movies that is. I'm guessing you've never seen the "Universal Classics" as people like to call them.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I've seen all of those too. The people lack common sense in there as well. Take Halloween for example.

I'm talking about stuff older than Halloween, like Dracula, Frankenstein, The Wolf Man and so on. I find the characters and plots to be pretty intelligent compared to all the mindless slasher movies we have today.

branding all current horror as mindless slasher movies is pretty sweeping. I really think that that was an 80s and 90s thing. Some newer horror series like Saw and Paranormal Activity are really excellent. I loved both. And the original Blair Witch

Yeah, that wasn't the right phrase to use at all, not all modern horror movies are slashers, not even the majority in today's time, and not all of them are mindless. What I meant was that, in my opinion, most (not all) modern horror movies aren't as intelligent or enjoyable because they rely on gruesome effects and shocks to be scary, while the horror movies from the 40s or earlier tend to make better use of atmosphere and subtly (there's a reason mainstream horror movies used to be considered A-pictures a lot of the time, but almost never are today). I understand that there are still good horror movies being made, just not as nearly as many of them in my opinion.

I think the reason they were considered A-pictures is because people were FAR more sensitive to them than they are now. Kids today play games like Resident Evil and Silent Hill, and see scary movies all the time. That's why nowadays they've taken a shift towards more psychological stuff, because that's the kind of stuff that can scare anyone. I'm a particular fan of "found-footage" style. But there was also this one (the name escapes me) where some kind of computer glitch opens up a inter-world connection and all these freaky things come out of computers and other appliances - that movie was messed UP, but i loved it. There was also "Ring" - fantastic movie. Really old horror is easy to be nostalgic about, but wasn't really as clever as most people think. I think horror in a modern setting is usually much cleverer and better thought-through

I just think that when people yarn on about nostalgic things like music and movies, they too easily forget the truth, which is that NOT ALL things from that period were awesome. My roommate used to do it with music from the 60s and 70s. Every time we were out he would say "I'm tellin' ya, music from the 60s and 70s, there's nothing better, it's never been bested, it's the only music that stood the test of time" - of course we know it's a total crock (one obvious truth being that pieces by Mozart and Beethoven were not only as, if not more, recognizable to more people, but also had stood a longer "test of time"). Same can be said about the sentiment in this post. Just because you know some movied from the 40s doesn't mean all the movies back then were great. They were just the ones that stoof the test of time. You already see modern movies doing the same thing, horror from the 80s and 90s that is still loved when they show it on tv. Basically, we need to remember that nostalgia shouldn't guide us too much in our judgment of our current state

I sure as heck wasn't around back then, and I only discovered older horror movies in recent years, so I don't think its fair to say that nostalgia is what makes them seem better to me. However, I do agree with you for the most part. There’s good and bad movies, music, etc, from every time period, and generalizing by saying stuff like “it was so much better back in _______” is sort of stupid. On the subject of horror movies, yes, the only reason it seems like it was so much better from the 20s-40s (although I said the 40s, I wasn’t talking specifically about that one decade) is probably because the only ones people still remember and talk about today are the ones that were really good, creating the illusion that everything back then was really good, which of course, is false. However, I definitely see a difference in general style in the majority of movies between then and now. You may say that modern movies are more clever, but I feel that because older movies (the good ones, of course) had much less access to advanced effects, they were forced to put more emphasize on atmosphere and mood.

I prefer horror movies like The Invisible Man and Frankenstein to more recent stuff like Saw and The Grudge, and they do seem more “intelligent” (not even a great word to use when describing movies, I should’ve worded my comments differently before) to me, but that’s only a personal preference.

You're right about special effects, but that's why i love found-footage movies. Paranormal Activity was particularly good - fuckin' freaked me OUT completely. In the third one when she goes to answer the door and no-one's there, then comes back and all the stuff in the kitchen appears to have vanished, before it all comes crashing down from the ceiling. Seriously...i think i may have actually shat myself. Also when they're at the mother's house and she's standing in the background but the dude doesn't notice her. aaaaaaaargh it's an image from my worst nightmares!

Another thing they have in common: The black girl always dies first.

Gasp! The murderer is after us! Quick, hide in a closet and breathe heavily instead of calling the police!

"Omg a scary noise that is completely un-explainable because I'm home alone and anyone I know would have announced their presence. I better not check any of my doors or windows to make sure they're locked because I have total faith in my lack of home security. I'm also definitely not going to call anyone to come check on me cause I'm sure I'll be fine. Plus this strange power outage at only my house seems like a great time to walk around slowly in the dark with no weapon, instead of locking myself in my room or going to a neighbors house where there's light."

There's a car headed towards us! We should probably try to out run it rather than running off to the side!

"One of our friends just randomly disappeared! She said she was going to check the upstairs floor...hey let's go have sex in the upstairs master bedroom and wait for her to come back!"
