This is not necessarily true. You can vectorize fonts straight from a desktop application.

But the original fonts were copied from handwritten text, therefore someone must have written them by hand.

Not at all. You can use a desktop application to have the font drawn for you.

So what did people write with before computers? Do you really think that the first program written for any computer was a font creator? Right now it is extremely easy to create a font, but not to start off with.
