-129 It is a little ridiculous that it is a requirement to take a foreign language in school. It should really be a choice not forced upon us, amirite?

At least you get to pick the language.

What do you expect? You just generalized 300,000,000 people. Where are you from?

Nevermind, I glanced at your profile. You're American so that makes sense that you're criticizing Americans. Continue you on oh wise one.

If you wanna get into college, you should really be taking a language.

At my school you it's only required to take a language in year 8, where we have to study 3 languages and then English. Most people continue for at least a few years on one of the languages they learnt though.

True to some extent, but if you never at least tried it, you'd never know if you had a natural affinity for languages. Not to mention the people you could talk with, the fun you could have learning it, and its enormous benefits in society. I would've never found out I like Spanish if I wasn't forced to take something. Now I'm learning Slovenian of my own initiative, planning on going after German next. Let yourself try to like it and maybe you will.

Oh my God. No.

Studies have shown that one's capacity to pick up a foreign language is much greater during childhood and adolescence. So it seems like highschool is a better time than any to introduce foreign language to children. Plus I don't think many kids would make the effort to learn a language outside of school hours if it wasn't compulsary but they may be inclined to continue to study one if they are first exposed to it at school.

Globalization means languages are important. Best to learn them now while it's free, else you'll have to take them at a community college.
