Separation of Church and state is what protects churches from the government and it protects the government from churches. If the two were one and the same there would be required prayer in schools, a mandatory tax paid to the church and probably other stuff that I cant think of. By separating the two people can practice whatever religion they choose, or even none at all. The government can't tax churches and the churches don't have to follow some social laws that go against their beliefs (shaving for a job, performing interracial marriages, providing adoption services to single/gay people, etc).
For example, I'm not allowed to pray at school and that limits my freedom of religion and freedom of speech. The other day I was praying during a test and a teacher told me to be quite.
You can't have school sponsored prayers in public schools. But people can pray during school as much as they want and there is nothing the government can do about it. You can't, however, be disruptive during class.
Like where the government tries to control your life. With separation of church and state, the government is trying to make every thing secular and atheistic.
Take Russia for example. It was an secular government and it was communist. Then because it had separation of church and state and a secular government, people starting discriminating against religious people and it turned into a dictator ship.
Communism is basically a form of economy in which wealth is spread out equally, a doctor and a janitor would make the same amount of money. In theory it's a great idea and makes things more fair, but greed is part of human nature and someone will always want more, sometimes leading to dictatorship from communism, which is why most people view it as a bad thing. It has nothing to do with religion.
The reason equalizing wealth is a bad idea is because what incentive would the doctor have to do a good job? Communism leads to poor work ethic. Say you have a factory, and everybody there gets paid the same regardless of their work performance. Everybody might work hard at first, but without some incentive to make sure they're working hard (a guy with a whip or gun or something), eventually one employee begins to slack off. The other employees will notice and start to slack off themselves. Eventually, the government realizes this and starts to point guns at its citizens to make them work. And that's why communism is a bad idea.
Greed is good in certain amounts. Because of it, we have made great advances in technology to raise our standard of living.
This is in response to your doctor comment. When I was in high school, I had this friend (foreign exchange student) that wanted to be a doctor. I asked her about the money she would make and she told me that doctors are kind of like teachers here. They are very respected, but they don't get a fat paycheck. So money is never driving force, the people that become doctors actually want to become doctors. I think that's beautiful. Anyway, I'm not arguing for communism or anything. Just wanted to share that. :)
Money is (almost) always a driving force. Do you think as many people would want to be doctors if pay was minimum wage? Nope. Sure, some would. But you can bet your ass there wouldn't be so many.
Yeah, that was kinda my original point. Without a purely monetary incentive the people from her country actually wanted to do it and I think that's cool. But yes, I do realize most people are all about the Benjamins. :)
That doesn't sound fair at all. It would just encourage people to do shitty and lazy jobs because nobody would want to work sooo hard for no real reason.
Yes. Because there are only two types of governments in the world: theocratic and communist. If you don't have a state religion like Vatican City or Iran, the government automatically adopts a form of Marxism. That, comrades, is why the United States is a communist country.
Have your parents, pastor, rabbi, etc. write the school a note about your religion. You will be allowed to pray quietly in the hall before a test, I believe.
It in no way gives special rights to atheists. It simply keeps religion out of our government. You are free to practice your religion as you wish, just keep it out of the government. If there was no separation of church and state then it would be Christians who received "special rights". This way no one is favored and government can be handled in a way that peoples beliefs don't interfere in the lives of those who do not share those beliefs.
How can you be this stupid? This would be great because it could give Pagans and Agnostics be able to recite The Pledge of Allegiance without having to pledge to God when you're just trying to be loyal to America.
Discrimination? 84% of the world is religious! Is there no limit for stupidity!? Next people are going to say oxygen gives you cancer and water is the source of all evil in the world.
...No. We're not forcing you to not believe in god, or banning church or religious practices. You can keep your faith, just stop forcing it onto every other citizen of the country.
Freeing the slaves was discriminatory against white people, amirite?
Damn American government, always oppressing white slave owners.
It's not discriminatory, atheism isn't allowed in the political process either.
Stupidest thing i have ever read.

Thank you. People forget that it is as much for the church's benefit as anything else.
It is discriminatory. It gives atheists special rights and takes away my freedom of religion.
For example, I'm not allowed to pray at school and that limits my freedom of religion and freedom of speech. The other day I was praying during a test and a teacher told me to be quite.

But wouldn't separation of church and state lead to communism?
Like where the government tries to control your life. With separation of church and state, the government is trying to make every thing secular and atheistic.
Isn't it also used to refer to secular societies?
But it's a fact that all communist societies are secular.
Take Russia for example. It was an secular government and it was communist. Then because it had separation of church and state and a secular government, people starting discriminating against religious people and it turned into a dictator ship.
My guess is that you're a troll. But if you aren't, you're the biggest fucking idiot I've ever met.

Doctors were a bad example on my part.
Money is never a driving force?
Yeah, as opposed to, say here in America, where the motives to become a doctor aren't necessarily so noble.
Money is (almost) always a driving force. Do you think as many people would want to be doctors if pay was minimum wage? Nope. Sure, some would. But you can bet your ass there wouldn't be so many.

Actually, Russia encouraged paying people differently. I'm studying the subject this very moment -_-
True, but my point was that separation of church and state does NOT lead to communism.
That doesn't sound fair at all. It would just encourage people to do shitty and lazy jobs because nobody would want to work sooo hard for no real reason.

You are allowed to pray in school. Just do it on your own time and don't disrupt the educational process.
Have your parents, pastor, rabbi, etc. write the school a note about your religion. You will be allowed to pray quietly in the hall before a test, I believe.
Not separating the church and the state is taking away everyone else's freedom of religion.
It in no way gives special rights to atheists. It simply keeps religion out of our government. You are free to practice your religion as you wish, just keep it out of the government. How?

Now that you mention it, one thing all cancer patients have in common is that they all take in oxygen... You might be on to something.

Bitch if you don't like it move to Vatican
Can't tell if troll or just... someone who needs to read the First Amendment.
...No. We're not forcing you to not believe in god, or banning church or religious practices. You can keep your faith, just stop forcing it onto every other citizen of the country.
Posts like this make me so sad that there really exist such stupid people in the world.
When I first read this, I read "Separation of Church and Skate" and thought of NOFX.
