"Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of a heartless world, just as it is the spirit of a spiritless situation." Karl Marx was critical of religion, yes, but I don't think he was unkind. To call all religion a placebo is a bit demeaning, I think.

I contend that we are both atheists. I just believe in one fewer god than you do. When you understand why you dismiss all the other possible gods, you will understand why I dismiss yours

Dismissing all gods but one is the absolute polar opposite of dismissing them all. Dismissing all gods but the specific one or type you believe in is the foundation of religion.
