+71 Science majors/Genii: It's amazing how overly simplified they make things on the discovery channel, amirite?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

It's not like anyone would understand or be entertained if they didn't.

I realize that, however, the way they explain things is not correct a lot of the time, for example, i was watching an experiment that had to do with supernovae, and they used a big balloon filled with methane that was then lit on fire as a "demonstration", meanwhile, a supernova explosion has nothing to do with combustion.

Simplifying it is ok, but it's dumb when they simplify it to the point where it's not even right.

Exactly

They also show gravity as a bowling ball on a pillow. They're trying to show how it bends space-time. Is that a good example, or is it stupid?

I'm just wondering.

I'm sure us "Genii" know that the plural form of "genus" is "geniuses".

by Anonymous 12 years ago

YOU TELL THEM!

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I was reading this like "what the fuck is a genii? You mean geniuses?" side note: looking up genii on dictionary.com only shows the weird genius. Autocorrect realized genii as a word, also.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I googled it so it must be right!

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Yes, genii IS a word, but it's plural for "genie" not "genius".

by Anonymous 12 years ago

It sais genii and geniuses can be used interchangebly so I used genii because it looks cool

What was your source? Because if you Google "genii", it will tell you that it's the plural of genie. If you Google "geniuses", it will tell you that it's plural of genius. Nowhere in the genuis search have I seen "genii" as the plural.

I googled plural of genius, which linked me to wiktionary, which told me that the plural of genius in its orginal context (spirit, mind, soul) is genii, I understand that geniuses is the modern form, but genii looks way better.
