No no no no! You're limiting them of the opportunity to learn a whole fucking language as simply as being potty trained! By the time they're mature enough to realise which language they want to learn, it'll be far too late and they'll have to learn it like adults. If they don't like the other language when they grow up having known it, they can choose not to practice it. But if they do realise they want it and you didn't let them learn it as a baby, they can't simply learn it in a couple years as they could before! They'll have to spend years and it'll be a //bitch// to them to learn it as it was to you. Don't deprive them of such an amazing opportunity. It's like, if you could have fluency in any language at the snap of your fingers, would you do it? Yes. Then why not let your children have that if you did not?

actually, i wouldnt. learning another language would have no use to me in the career i am planning to go in to. luckily, most vacation spots i go to speak english, so i wouldnt need it either. it serves absolutely no purpose. if they want to learn it, then they can learn it and put the effort in.

the amount of happiness i would gain by knowing this is not equivalent to the painful studies and hours of sleep loss. to me, its just not worth it.

I'm a little late, but here's an example that might clear things up: From the day I was born, my mom spoke English around me and my dad spoke Spanish. By the time I was able to talk, I knew both fluently. I never had to study Spanish, I just learned it like you learned your first language.

I won't teach them Spanish or Japanese. I'm going to teach them some random language that they'll most likely never use.

Bilingual is preferable, but only if they don't hate the language. I take Chinese (I am Chinese) and I really hate the language, but the government forces everyone to learn their mother tongue. Personally, I think it should be called a bitchy mother in law tongue.

The same reason any country has a different language from another, really. Different countries created different sign languages to be used. For example, BSL is different from ASL because people in Britain came up with a different language then people in America, like how the Chinese made a different language then the English. People would assume that BSL and ASL are similar, but they are totally different. ASL is actually much closer to FSL.

Problem one: I'm not bilingual, so I am not exactly sure how I could teach them two languages. The only way that will happen is if I marry someone bilingual.

I'll be teaching my kids German. I have it on good authority that German will be the language of the land within 50 years. Okay, fine, a Mandarin Chinese variant of German.

My kids started Chinese Immersion in preschool! 1/2 the day in a traditional western class, 1/2 the day speaking Chinese only. From day one!
