yeah, it's bullshit when you walk in and there's no seats. -_- then you have to go and refund the fucking tickets.

Where I'm from you can check on the cinema's website to see which seats have been taken, and when you go buy the tickets you can see the cinema layout on the cashier's screen, so you can see exactly where the aisles are, where the wheelchair seats are and which seats/how many seats have been taken. Sometimes you can choose a seat, otherwise you can sit anywhere, although if you choose a sit you can still move to an empty one during the movie.

If you ask the cashier they should be able to tell you. At least they can at my local theaters.

I used to work at a theater, I always told the people buying tickets when there were less than 25 seats left. Everyone should do this.
