+283 The best Dr. Seuss books aren't the ones where he just made up funny sounding nonsense (Scrambled Eggs Super, Fox In Socks, The Foot Book, etc...); They're the ones that tell a true story, with an actual message, like How the Grinch Stole Christmas, The Lorax, Horton Hears a Who, or The Sneetches, amirite?

By "true story", I don't mean a story that actually happened. I mean the second definition of true (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/true ).

THE SNEETCHES IS MY FREAKIN FAVORITE. We had a Dr. Seuss day at school, and we were supposed to dress like our favorite Dr. Seuss character, so I just slapped a star on my belly. Almost no one knew what I was, so every time someone asked what I was, I replied "The Star-Bellied Sneetches had bellies with stars but Plain-Bellied Sneetches had none upon thars." **TRUE STORY** (as in, that actually happened)

(This is months after you made that comment, but I was searching Seuss so I found it. Sorry, I just don't want to seem like a creeper) MINE TOO! I love that book so much! I just love how the Sneeches are just like "We're better than you because of these stars. What? You have stars now? Oh um.. Now we're better than you because we don't have stars! Take that!" People will always find a reason they're better than you.

I'm glad someone else likes it! It's rare finding someone who knows it exists. They should make it into a movie.

They're still just children's books with morals slightly larger than those in the Berenstein Bears.

They actually have some significant political messages in them.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Sure, but written in a format for easy to kids to understand. It isn't really fair to be feeding your kids politics at that age either

Not all of it is about contentious political issues, the Sneetches is a commentary on racism. He was also a political cartoonist and even made movies for the US army during World War II. Not all of his work was intended for children even though it is written in a childish poetic way. You can read all about him here. He was kind of awesome. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dr._Seuss#Political_views

Many of them were. I'm not saying that none of his work is valid, just that the morals expressed in many of his books for children don't necessarily use much proof or back up their opinions much, which in my mind makes them lose any credibility they might have had otherwise

The Lorax is my favorite! Onceler: "hmmm, I see you point yes I do see your point" secretary: Stock markets just closed, and Thneeds Inc. stock is up! Up 27 and 5/8 points! Oncler: Wow. Wow! Rowdy-dow!

I think Oh the Places You'll Go is the most inspiring book ever. It still just about brings me to tears when I read it.
