+236 It's weird to think that the ancient Roman and Greek statues we see as pure white and classically simplistic were actually painted in vibrant, almost gaudy colors, amirite?

I like the short shorts on Stele of Aristion.

The ones with pots are nicer but the ones with people look ridiculous. I'm torn.

And when I found out, I sobbed for many hours into the night.

I read it on Cracked.

"Almost?" Tackiest shit ever. I'm glad I recall them how they are now and not how they were.

I honestly don't think it looks that bad...

http://ctrlv.in/98612 The plain grey/white looks very sophisticated to me, and your mind fills in the blanks. I think my main issue is how terribly the eyes are always done, but the color choice is just ridiculous.

It looks almost cartoony. And hey, maybe these colors were fashionable back then?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

It is definitely cartoonish, the colors are all very flat and as OP said very gaudy. I think I wouldn't have such a huge problem with it if I had seen them as how they were all my life, but I was brought up with such a uniquely stunning type of sculpture that really impressed me artistically, and then was extremely disappointed when I learned how they were intended to look.

Oh, I think I get what you mean. Like if you found out that Mona Lisa was colored with bright pink and neon green.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Now it makes sense why some of their pupils were never carved out...they would just paint it on

It's disgusting trying to imagine the tiny penises on Greek and Roman statues in vibrant colors.
