Unfortunately, they must start from the first day, or else people will know they're not. This is also the reason that if I ever need to go to the US to study, I will spend a year learning a bit of kung-fu. Enough to know what I'm doing and the real positions etc, but not so much that I have to dedicate all my time to it.
