When teachers threaten to choose someone if no one volunteers, it makes no sense because if you don't want to be called upon, your not going to volunteer now. You would just wait and hope he/she doesn't choose you. amirite?

they're not trying to scare people into volunteering, they're trying to get a kid to take a stab at it. They just ask for volunteers first because a kid who //wants// to take a stab at it is more likely to be correct.

Nah, I usually wait to raise my hand until no one else volunteers, because i want to give others a chance to speak, so some of my teachers say that to let me know no one else is going to say anything haha
