If you arrive too early, you have the uncomfortableness of sitting all by yourself at a table while trying not to look self conscious, if you arrive too late, most of the seats are already taken and you're forced to sit at a spot that you wouldn't normally choose. The key is coming right before the main crowd so you get a good spot but you don't have to be alone for too long, amirite?

I usually come to lunch early and my friends always take their sweet ass time so I'm left sitting at the table for 5 minutes, by myself. - - If I come too late, they rush the table and I'm left sitting at the end, which I hate.
