Runs on coal...?

The coal helps generate the steam. But it's a steam engine.

Magical steam?

It' s sort of weird that there is a Hogwarts Express. I mean, most parents could side-along apparate each of their kids to the school, or they could travel by floo powder and then all the muggleborns could just be driven to a nearby drops off point and walked up by teachers, or even just put on a normal train and be met by teachers at the station.
But I like the Hogwarts Express too much to really complain.

They needed a way for the magical community to travel in mass without attracting attention by the muggle community. Not everyone could apparate, there would have to be ridiculous amount of floo power stations that would constantly be changing and also would leave a security problem into the school, and most wizards don't drive plus magic carpets are illegal. The Hogwarts Express is a normal train and they're met by Hagrid.
