Happiness in intelligent people is one of the rarest things you know, amirite?

I used to think this too but then I started smoking pot. Now I'm just as smart and always happy.

I'm intelligent and unhappy, my dad is intelligent and unhappy. My sister is extremely intelligent and extremely happy, so she defies this rule. But I'd say it's usually true.

I don't think it's so much that intelligent people 'see the evil in the world' and simply can't get beyond that. I think it's more that they see the evil in themselves, and that they strive so hard to understand their world and their lives and themselves that they struggle to feel contentment with what they already know. They are intelligent, and so of course they are going to seek meaning and discovery in life. These pursuits, however, are so blatenty daunting - and likely impossible - that the intelligent person is unhappy.

Another thing is that someone who is intelligent finds it sometimes 'hard' (I'm not sure what word would describe it best) or frustrating to to people who aren't as intelligent, and then they realize how useless it is to try to 'teach' people who aren't as intellligent to make better choices and think wiser/more rational thoughts, and they become seemingly cynical. Because otherwise they just end up dealing with indefatigable stupidity. And like someone else said above, I'm also (hopefully) intelligent and (unfortunately) find it hard to be happy, my father is way more intelligent and even more unhappy, my mother and sister are not very intelligent and they are so happy I can't even stand it sometimes.

Agreed. I've seen videos of intelligent people attempting to teach young earth creationists basic science, and by the end of the video they're usually either openly furious or clearly trying to withhold their inner anger. That could certainly cause unhappiness.

I'd call myself intelligent and happy... I think I'm happy because I'm intelligent. I can realize my life is so much better than kids who don't even know their parents and live in terrible houses.. Plus I try to be a good person in most of what I do so at the end of the day I'm pretty content.

I'm a rather intelligent person (or at least //I// think so) and I find the most enjoyment out of intellectual pursuits. When I'm at school, the best parts of my day are discussions in philosophy class or learning a new theorem in math class or any activity in any subject, really, as strange as that may sound. And then when I get home, I spend my free time writing. In that sense, I'm happy //because// I'm intelligent.

Maybe something about never really fitting into regular society and not making legitimate human connections. Not because people see that you're smart and think you're weird. They actually think you're really funny and a lot of people like you. It's just that you go home at night after being with them knowing that on many levels you are not accepted. Something inside of you keeps you from being one of them. No girl will ever see you as more than a person to make them laugh or help them with something. No person will ever be your true friend and see you as someone special to them over anyone else. A best friend so to speak. You will have very nice conversations with your own family, but for some reason you can't really connect with them and let them know your problems. For some reason it's all because your mind will only see things in separate sections. It's useful in debate and class because you can be strategical and figure things out easier, but it is the one thing that keeps you from ever really connecting with someone. Also it can help you think of better jokes. But your mind is always wholly separate from theirs. You will always, in some way, be alone. But I could be wrong.

I don't know about that. From my experience, the intelligent people (or at least the ones at my school) seem to be pretty happy. The people who aren't quite as smart seem to always complain about everything.

I get phases of depression where I just can't deal with the world anymore (usually timed with my president coming on TV. No, I'm not American). It's frustrating and overwhelming to see the big picture and know we're headed to our doom while - being an indvidual - there's hardly anything to do about it, and everyone else seems to be extremely happy over their new designer shoes. *sigh* So, I'm either an intellectual or a pessimist. Also, I like shoes dearly.

that is because everything anyone says or do to them is over thinked ..e.g. "your crush sat next to you in a lecture, normal people might think of it as a good thing, but intelligent people might over think about the whole situation and thinks she's just trying to get closer to the hot guy beside me and i'm in her fucking way, or she probably needs help with her homework...etc.

All the intelligent people in my family are the ones who suffer from depression, including me. So this is a good general rule. My best friend is extremely intelligent and very happy, though. But she's a ginger so most rules don't apply to her. On an unrelated note, I literally JUST finished reading A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemmingway today.
