-53 You wonder why, if one cannot simply walk into Mordor, Gandalf didn't poof up some eagles and simply fly into Mordor, amirite?

1.) Gandalf can't poof up eagles, only summon them. 2.) They would have been shot down if Gandalf had not been leading a distraction war. 3.) Even if they had counted on that, Gandalf died (kind of) before they got to Mordor, so they would have abandoned that plan.

This was covered in the books. The eagles didn't side in the war until the end- the eagle that Gandalf rode on knew him personally and owed him a favor for saving his life. iirc, the eagles are pretty proud as well, and wouldn't be okay with being a transportation service.

Like the others said: 1.) The mission would end up failing. If you notice - Frodo went secretly through Mordor to prevent the Eye from seeing him. A giant eagle would take that away - and then Nazgul would be after them. 2.) The Eagles really aren't on a side in the war. They're kind of like Ents - neutral. The Eagle who helped Gandalf knew him before, so allowed him transportation. So, taking that into mind, the Eagles wouldn't be safe from the Ring's power. They'd want it for themselves just like anyone else, and not even 'saving Middle-earth' would conflict with their desire because they really probably wouldn't care unless it affected them directly. 3.) Gandalf can't poof Eagles, nor can he actually hold the Ring since it would probably manipulate him too. Not to mention the fact that Isengard was still going to war with Rohan, and without Gandalf's help, they all would have died. (it would take at least a week to reach Mordor via Eagle, and even more from hiding from the Orcs and such.) And then Gondor's time would come, and Denethor wouldn't have let anyone fight and would have been dead along with his son. Sorry for writing so much; I'm a bit of a Tolkien nerd.

Don't apologize, that was great. But I wish there was an alternate version where Gandalf DID take the ring and become an unstoppable mf'er.

I'd write some long comment about the logistics of LOTR, but I really just came here to say I lol'd at the phrasing. "poof up some eagles" classic.
