+186 While you don't see how anyone could be homophobic, as long as the homophobe isn't openly bashing gays or treating them badly, they have a right to be who they are. Just like someone who is peladophobic or pogonophobic has a right. You can't help your emotional response to something, amirite?

I'm really not sure how to feel about homophobes, because I know that they were raised with it or just don't know much about the homosexual lifestyle, and don't know how to react, but at the same time I don't know how someone can be so close-minded and hateful. It's simply fear of the unknown, and they don't care enough to try to understand another human being.

Credetemi should be favoriting this any minute now. All hail the homophobes and their right to be hateful!

I like to think that there are homophobes who are able to be supportive. That they can accept someone being gay, even if their gut reaction to it is still a negative one. Like you said, you can't help your emotional response, so it's okay to feel that way so long as you aren't hateful about it. To be clear, I define a homophobe as someone uncomfortable with homosexuality, not a gay-basher. Gay-bashers are all homophobes but not all homophobes are gay-bashers.

I agree with a majority of this post, but I see homophobia as a misnomer- an actually phobia is an extreme or irrational fear. I see "homophobes" as those who disagree with the homosexual lifestyle, not someone who can't explain why they are afraid of something that most don't find scary. People aren't born knowing to hate homosexuals- it's a learned behavior that is usually coupled with a need to hate or be afraid. Personally I think of most homophobes are ignorant, but I do agree with the idea that if said homophobe isn't being rude or treating anyone poorly, then to each his own. Just for the record, I'm Catholic and I believe that there is absolutely nothing wrong with being gay whatsoever.

Well, yeah - if we didn't give them that right we'd be just as bad as the homophobes who act on their fear you were referencing.
