+202 Americans: If you are going to travel to Europe, it'd be a good idea to pretend to be Canadian, amirite?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Wasn't that on an episode of The Simpsons?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Everything was on an episode of The Simpsons.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

It probably was, but my post wasn't based off of that.

Are Europeans really prejudice to the extinct that I have to pretend to be a part of a different nationality to protect myself? Or does whole world just love Canadians?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

A great portion of the world believes Americans are annoying, fat, stupid assholes.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Oh, so it's a great portion of the world who's prejudice. Why should I pretend to be Canadian?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

People are less prejudiced against Canadians. They're pretty neutral.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

*extent you stupid caveman.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I wouldn't say it's a matter of protecting yourself, but Americans have a reputation for being awful tourists (and they've earned it--many of them don't bother learning anything about the local language, cultural customs, basic courtesies, etc.)

This was discussed on TMZ once. Dax got so much shit from everyone after that. I personally dont think i would do it. You shouldn't have to be ashamed of where you were born. Its not like you had a choice or changes who you are inside.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Its not like you do it because you are ashamed of who you are, it's a security thing. The people that mug you cause you sound American are not gonna talk to you and see if you fit the stereotype first, they're just gonna kick your ass and take all your money. With Canadians they are generally welcomed by just about everybody so it greatly lessens your chances of being jumped by putting a Canadian flag pin on your backpack

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Thats kind of stupid tho. If a person is gonna rob someone they're gonna make sure they're american first?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Depends where you go really. If you were to go to places America has treated badly you'd be much more likely to be scammed and such to get back at America. Whereas if you were Canadian going to those places you'd be much less likely to get harmed.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

-_- In history almost everyone has harmed/treated someone else badly. People need to get over this shit.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

No but they would know instantly from the American accent. Immediately from hearing their voice they would think American, but Canadians sound almost identical. Plus for the most part American tourists would probably stick out

by Anonymous 11 years ago

so, tell me how these crime doers will figure out whether I'm American or Canadian, since we sound so much alike. for all they know they mugged a Canadian therefore it shouldn't matter what my nationality is.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

THAT is why Americans tend to put Canadian flag pins on their backpacks and clothes, so potential muggers think "Hey I'm not about to mug a guy who sounds like an American and is a stereotypically obnoxious American, I'm about to mug a guy who sounds like an American but is obviously a stereotypically kind hearted Canadian" savvy?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Well I wouldn't want to go to Europe then if they're going to treat me badly for something I have no control over.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I don't care what anyone would say, I'm proud to call myself American. If people will really treat me that badly, they can go fuck themselves.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Or if you're from California just say so. Don't say you're American, say you're Californian. Or if you do say you're American you might hear "Lots of people don't like Americans, but I'm not like that. I really like Americans" or something to that effect. It's probably bullshit but the people were nice enough.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Funny thing is that's true. I went to Europe and the second I said I was Canadian everyone lightened up.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I've been to the UK and no one seemed to have a problem. But maybe the UK is a bit more open to Americans than the rest of Europe is. I don't know. I suppose we'll see this summer, I'm going to be visiting the Netherlands, Belgium, and France as well as England again...
