It is fairly pointless, unless the door is silent and they're trying to alert you to their presence.

My parents do something like that to me all the time! They knock but then immediately open the door without waiting for me to give an answer. It's more of like a warning knock to let me know they're going to barge in rather than a knock asking permission to enter.
