Texan: I thought it was a unit of measurement. Seriously though, in Texas it might as well be. These people are serious about their football.

I can only speak for SC and TX, but I think most states are probably serious about some type of football. In South Carolina, practically everything was about college football. I had friends that moved from out of state that didn't care about USC or Clemson and people just kind of stared at them like they were weird.

In terms of area it is about one acre - it's usually the common reference people think about. It's also used for length of course.
