-134 Did Rowling think it was really necessary to make Dumbledore gay? Unless it was a part of the plot, it wasn't really all that important to know. "Yeah, the new book in the series is going to really exciting. Oh and by the way, Dumbledore likes penis.", amirite?

It was never in the books, it was just something mentioned in an interview. I believe she didn't even really plan to tell people. It's just one of those things she knew about her own characters, like how she knows Luna married a guy named Rolf and had twins, and it became an interesting side note to the stories. There's nothing wrong with that.

It does pertain to the plot in a way. Dumbledore most likely had feelings for Grindlewald which is part of the reason why he acted as he did when he was younger.

Exactly! He probably wouldn't have put up with some of Grindelwald's crap if he didn't love him.

I think it's really nice to see a gay character who isn't all about being gay. It's refreshing to see how, yes, someone can be gay and NOT have it affect everything they do hugely. She doesn't need to mention straight characters being straight because everyone assumes that anyway. Why should we not include gay characters just because their story arcs aren't about homosexuality, when we can include straight characters whose story arcs aren't about heterosexuality? It's just another aspect of his character. JK Rowling (rightly) assumes that Harry Potter fans might like little snippets of information helping them know the characters better.

Did Rowling think it was really necessary to make everyone else straight?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

@anon What's that even supposed to mean ? How did you get this feeling that she may have thought it was 'really necessary' to make everyone else straight?

It was a joke.

Oh =D (face palm)

Anyone else whose sex life had no relevance to te plot didn't have a sexuality stated.

I'm totally okay with Dumbledore being gay (it even makes some sense if you think about it), but I couldn't help but feel it was a little out of the blue.

She was asked in an interview if Dumbledore had ever fallen in love himself, as he so strongly believes in the power of love. She responded saying she thought of him as gay, and having been in love with Grindelwald. It was a legitimate response to a legitimate question. It's not like she was trying to make a big deal out of it. It wasn't relevant to the plot, so she didn't try to make it relevant.

If people care this much if someone is gay, a book character of all people, we are never going to move forward as a society that accepts gays. ..

In all honesty everyone, this post was more of me quoting a joke that my friend told a few weeks ago about Harry Potter that I thought was funny. I didn't think it would be as offensive as it turned out to be though.
