If someone is implying that they're going to get you something as a gift, and you specifically tell them you don't want one and not to get you it, it's not ungrateful not to thank them when they go ahead and get you it anyway, amirite?

Honestly, just be happy they actually gave you something. I know this is really overused and old, but seriously, it's the thought that counts.

Yeah, but if you explicitly tell someone you don't like something in advance and they still get it for you, then there's something wrong with that thought

It may well be the thought that counts, but if that thought is "I wanted to get you something you specifically told me you didn't want." then what it counts for is that this person thinks they know better than you.

What if they hinted they were getting you a great Dane. And you said 'Hey, do not get me that huge dog, I live in a one bedroom apartment that doesn't allow pets with my girl friend who is quite allergic to dogs.' and they get you a great Dane anyways. You are completely reasonable in not expressing being grateful to them
