If you think about it, mangled and/or dead bodies shouldn't be scary. We probably only evolved the fear of them because whatever did that to them could still be around to do it to you, amirite?

I think it's scarier because its something familiar, but unfamiliar to us because a dead body isn't the norm. I think we fear what we don't understand more

It might also be because it reinforces the idea that life is short and a gruesome death could just as easily happen to you (at least that's what I used to think). Fortunately I eventually got over it.
