+157 If your arm got stuck under a boulder in the wild, you'd rather sit there and die not slowly and painfully hack away your arm with a knife, amirite?

It's easy to agree with this in my current state of mind, but I can't say with any certainty what I'd do in the event that I'm staring down the scarred visage of Death. Theoretically, you wouldn't feel much pain because - in a fit of adrenaline-induced madness - the reward center of your brain would flood it with natural painkillers. This quote from Neuromancer (by William Gibson) sums it up in one sentence: "With enough endorphin analog, she could walk on a pair of bloody stumps."

That's true

Adrenaline rushes only last so long. And if you're not exercising to build up your stores of epinephrine, it's not going to last long.

You must really not value life. That I know of, you only get one life, and I'm letting letting a chunk of earth get in the way of that. You also forgot a comma so I first read this as you want to 'quickly die and cut off your arm'.

Die slowly of dehydration and starvation or live life with one arm... I'd rather live... since Aron Ralston lived and is living.

127 hours is one of my favorite movies, but the scene where he cuts his arm off just looks so painful that I could never imagine myself gather up enough courage to do the same

When he cuts through his nerve... I can sit through every "Saw" movie and not even flinch but that scene gets me every time

Prosthetics are getting better and better.

It's probably less about the fact that you would only have one arm than the fact that you would have to slowly cut off your arm

Screw that. Pain is temporary, death and armlessness are permanent, so I compared the two similar ones. Even if it was unbearably painful, I'd pass out and die in peace.
