+269 People always think that if you have a phobia it's because you had a bad encounter at some point in your life. But that's not true. Fear is about possibilities. Not things that happened but things that might happen, amirite?

A phobia is defined as an irrational fear. If something bad happens that causes you to be afraid of something, that fear is no longer irrational.

My bad

No, what you said was entirely correct, I was simply elaborating.

Just because something bad happened to a person does not mean that a fear of that thing can't be irrational.

I'd say it does. For example, a fear of dogs could very well be an irrational fear. However, a fear of dogs spawning from a traumatic event such as being attacked by one makes the fear seem much more rational, no? That's just how I see it, I guess.

Okay, so I had a fear of dogs up until about 4th or 5th grade because I was attacked by one when I was 3. But, any dog I saw; I'd immediately get afraid, even if it was the most friendly dog. I would call that irrational.
