You support Stem Cell research and believe that it will provide countless positive outcomes, amirite?
by Anonymous12 years ago
Fuck. Can a mod change that to provide? Please.
by Anonymous12 years ago
Thanks mate. Good to know.
by Anonymous12 years ago
I've spoken to a few scientific researchers, and they've all said that fetal stem cells really aren't that useful and are only given so much attention in the media because of the controversy, not because of any actual benefit.
by Anonymous12 years ago
Fetal Stem Cells are to Stem Cells as Squares are to Rectangles.
by Anonymous12 years ago
Whoops. I assumed you meant fetal stem cells, since that's what most people mean when they say "stem cells". In that case, then I'll go change my vote, because other types of stem cell research is very fruitful.
by Anonymous12 years ago
Yea. I find it absurd that so many people are against it when only a very small fraction actually comes from aborted fetuses.
by Anonymous12 years ago
They don't come from aborted fetuses at all. They only come from unneeded embryos at fertility clinics, where they develop it until it's a blastocyst and take it from there. None at all comes from abortions, and the process doesn't encourage abortions.
That's one of the misconceptions about stem cell research. You should only be against stem cell research if you're against fertility clinics.

Wow. Thanks. I had always thought that it was possible to get get them from the feotus but it wasn't a sufficient amount and between that and the controversy they just didn't bother.
by Anonymous12 years ago
well what has it done so far? just wondering
by Anonymous12 years ago
Well because of the controversy behind it the needed research can't be done. All that I know of that it's currently used for are bone marrow transplants for Leukemia treatment.
However....Possible treatments include types of cancer, multiple sclerosis, Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, spinal cord injuries, and muscle damage. (Along with others that I'm sure I'm missing.)

Grown an ear on a rat's back. It's pretty amazing stuff.
by Anonymous12 years ago
That is amazing! I saw that picture. I thought it was computer generated.
by Anonymous12 years ago
Nope. I was watching a thing about it on the Science channel. Or maybe it was the discovery channel. But they can get rid of all the living cells on a heart or something by dipping it into some kind of chemical, then they heart, or something, will just be white. Then they put the stem cells on it and put it in a bio generator (I think that's what it's called. It's got the same temperature as the body and has the same conditions) and BOOM. You have a new heart with your own cells so there's no chance of your body rejecting it.

As if I needed more reason to support Stem Cells. Thank you for this. Up until now my interest in medical science has been strictly neurological. Just one one thing to learn.

Just found this on tumblr. http://ctrlv.in/96922

I'm all for advancement in science and everything, and I have nothing morally against it; my only concern would be over population.
by Anonymous12 years ago
Do you mean because it would aid in healing those who are ill and thus prolong the lives of people who would otherwise have died?
by Anonymous12 years ago
Yes. It sounds bad, like I want people to die, but I don't mean it like that. I think it's great that we can prolong lives like that, just think it would lead to overpopulation.
by Anonymous12 years ago
Help get more money to NASA. They need it. They currenty receive .004% of the tax payer dollar. Imagine what they could do with more funding. Over population would not be a problem. We'd have space colonies in no time.
by Anonymous12 years ago
No, I get what you're saying and overpopulation is a definite problem. But by that logic, do you think we shouldn't have hospitals available to aid any injured/ill people? Just curious.
by Anonymous12 years ago
Absolutely not. Providing medicine isn't the same as providing an entire organ. I don't know much about stem cell research at all, it just seems like it could cause problems.
by Anonymous12 years ago
Countless? No. Many? Of course
by Anonymous12 years ago
Science never ends
by Anonymous12 years ago
are you talking about adult stem cells or embryonic or both
by Anonymous12 years ago
I'm talking about Stem Cell research. So basically whatever they need for the best results.
