When one of my friends runs out of things to say, she says "lol", "yah", or "lol yah." what am I supposed to say to that?! And then when I don't text her back she's like "dude you didn't respond"

I've just given up on casual texting because all of my friends are boring as fuck over the phone. I mainly only text now to make plans or ask about homework.
