I don't know how it is now, but when I was in elementary school they put a lot more emphasis on writing cursive than typing. I think speed typing would be a much more useful skill.
At my elementary school, it wasn't necessary. We had computer lab time and one of the games taught you how to type correctly but you weren't graded on it.
Just to clarify, the reason I think that speed typing is pretty important is because office jobs are on the rise. Speed typing would just be a useful skill to have for typing up reports and stuff.
At my elementary school we also had computer class. It was in a rotation with art and music so like on Monday we'd have art, Tuesday music, Wednesday computer, and so on and so forth. In computer class we had to do lessons on typing, with a keyboard cover so we couldn't look for keys. We also learned how to write in cursive, which in my opinion, is fucking useless.
I hate how in my high school, the computer classes are about typing. It's like, we're in high school. If we don't know how to type by now, we would have flunked out.
To make matters worse, all of the basic classes are requisites for the cool classes like web design and computer graphics. I really wanted to take web design, but it's not worth taking my 7th class about typing and how to work power point.
I think I'm the only person who still writes in cursive. But you learn how to type in either middle school/high school, you don't really need it 'til then.
I think that writing in cursive isn't really that necessary except for signing your name. But reading cursive is a skill that I think more people should have.
We learned to type in elementary school. Once a week we would go to the computer lab and we would have to do a lesson on Type2Learn Jr. We had an optional computer class in middle school, but most sixth graders took it since they couldn't actually choose their classes. They also had Type2Learn and I think you had to finish it by the end of the semester.
I don't think that actually contributed too much to how fast I type though, since I was on the computer most of the time anyways.
In elementery school we did this typing program, Mavis Beacon, or something. I was too young to care, and there was not enough emphasis. in middle school it was from this old fashioned book, and we were tested on it. I learned in a semester. Now I can type completely without looking, and it is a great skill. I only write in bad cursive when I'm being lazy.
My school was a bitch about learning how to type. They actually graded us on our posture and ability to use the home row keys and pressing each individual key with a certain finger, etc. Then on the "typing exam" we had to put a towel over our hands and each time we looked under, we got like 5 points deducted. It was a crazy bitch. Plus we had to memorize where things like !@#$%&*() those were, while having the towel over our hands. BRUTAL
Haha, my computer teacher in elementary school made us put towels over our hands too. I don't remember her grading us that harshly but I remember having really sweaty hands.
In middle school we had a typing segment in our career class but the teacher never even watched us, so we all just typed with two fingers. To this day, I can't type properly.

My high school has a keyboarding class where all you do is type. That's just fucking stupid.

but learning cursive isn't useful ever. At least they'll actually be learning something useful by speedtyping.

I was taught both skills in school, and now I don't use either.
I do type my essays, but I don't use the quick-typing-all-fingers technique I was taught in school.
You don't type up your essays?

Same thing with my school and most schools in my county. Most people in my high school have no computer skills.

The only cursive anyone needs to know is their names, for signing checks made out to me.
Nope! I got dibs!
No! I want those checks!
