+64 The difference between a good parent and a cheap parent is a good parent will buy a 99-in-1 handheld game instead of a Gameboy and say, "I know this isn't what you asked for, but we feel that this is good enough," then understand why the kid is not overcome with joy. A cheap parent will do the same, but say, "I heard this is just as good, so pretend it does the one thing you wanted a Gameboy for, or else you're an ungrateful brat", amirite?

I have nothing against parents trying to save money, because that's a very good thing. My problem is with parents telling their kids that they're going to get what they asked for, then come home with a piece of crap. From the kid's perspective, they get either a 99 in 1 or a Gameboy, and getting one will result in them never getting the other.

Didn't happen to me. It happened to my friend when we were seven and from then on I always ended my requests with, "If you can't find it, don't get me anything, k?"
