-14 TV shows are ridiculous lately. Why should you sit around watching fake scenarios when you could be up living your own life? amirite?

According to that logic, you shouldn't read any fiction books either?

Nope. While watching television bombs you with a censorial experience (leaving not much room for imagination and creativity as the images and scenes are displayed before you), reading allows you to learn actively.

Ahh yes. I remember when I read "Cell" by Stephen King I learned so much. As apposed to shows like Breaking Bad, which teach you bits and pieces of Chemistry.

The goal of the show isn't to teach you about Chemistry. It's a drama telling a story, not a show on the discovery channel. It's like saying "I only learned bits and pieces about police work from Dexter" (good pun in there, pretty unintentional)

Even though knowledge in school subjects is (somewhat) important, I don't always want to learn an science or history lesson, however interesting they may be. Sometimes I want to see a story with emotions and people.

"While watching television bombs you with a censorial experience (leaving not much room for imagination and creativity as the images and scenes are displayed before you) reading allows you to learn actively." Why does it matter if TV bombs me with a censorial experiance? And you can be imaginitive and creative even with the scenes being played out in front of you. I suppose I'm not activley learning when I watch Escape to Chimp Eden, Through the Wormwhole, Big Cat Diary, Ted Talks, etc. just because I can see it? But I am activley learnin, or even learning at all, when I read Harry Potter...? In that case, they shouldn't show educational videos in school and you should have to read from the book instead of listening to the teacher. Also they said "by that logic", as in living your own life instead of watching imaginary scenarios not learning and having a censorial experiance.

because some o these scenario's are put to things that will most likely never happen in your life. we watch them because, as humans, we are naturally interested to see what people would do in this hypothetical situation

But the nice thing about (certain) TV shows is that all is right with the world by the end of the episode, whereas in real life the bad guy doesn't always lose. It's called escapism.

People watch too much TV. Some shows are good art, but the most popular shows (American Idol, Big Bang Theory, etc) are just junk.

You guys act like all you watch are shows about chemistry. Please, That is ridiculous. All those shows about gossip and sex? (It will be a hypothetical situation if all you do is sit at home.) How could you possibly learn anything from those shows? It irritates me because if you actually sit down and look through the select shows that are available, they're completely inane. I am just saying kids should try to go out more and enjoy the world. Suffer, love, and live for real and not through damn hypothetical situations. God. That makes me sick. You guys obviously enjoy breaking people down for nothing. You should have asked what shows I found ridiculous instead of waffling around with me on this subject.

Movies and television shows are just as mentally stimulating, if not more so, than books. Not every book is a work of art just because it's on paper. I would rather watch Raise The Red Lantern than read a crappy run-of-the-mill YA paranormal book, for example. You use your imagination just as actively while watching something, like you do reading something.

Give me some data instead of words. Honestly, I'm not a rock. I'll budge if you can actually support your suggestion.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Are you suggesting that television shows and movies are inherently less than books simply because they aren't written?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I quite enjoy tuning out of reality and just watch a fake world, with an interesting story, and with some scenes I'll most certainly will never see in my entire life. My imagination is happy being fed, and my empathy allows me to "connect" with fake people's stories. I'm still living my own life just fine. Relaxing is part of living. It can even be consider a necessity.
