If somebody asks me what type of music I like, I normally tell them a sub-genre. If I just say hardcore, they might be thinking deathcore which I don't listen to because I like clean vocals. If I say post-hardcore, there's not as much ambiguity. I also listen to pop punk, which I wouldn't just call punk (because it's really not).
