+74 It's amazing that even after we realize that certain debates are entirely circular, e.g. God's existence, we still continue to fervently attack our opponents and defend our own positions. It's not necessarily a bad thing, but it IS interesting. amirite?

what's that?

A .gif of Michael Jackson eating popcorn. It's a joke since you posted about religion that a flamewar may break out.

The post isn't about religion, it's about circular argument. I just used God's existence as an example. It can't be denied - as long as it can't be proven, the debate remains circular. It doesn't question anyone's beliefs. But, having said that, I'm sure there'll be the odd crazy who comes along to attack the example I used.

But it has potential to break out in a flamewar.

Not if I just silence them with a quick blast of logic. In truth, a flamewar over this topic would be like a flamewar over a discussion as to whether the sky was blue or not.

STOP CRUSHING MY DREAMS!

I think it's because to a lot of people, it's impossible to understand why someone wouldn't agree with them, to most of us, our ideas //seem// infallible and the other parties' arguments just don't make sense.

While I wouldn't use "infallible" to describe my ideas, I do defend them fervently because they ARE mine after all, haha. many would stand up and defend their country with the same fervor, despite its faults. When in a debate or a heated discussion, my focus remains on defending my ideas, but more importantly, also trying to understand and acknowledge an opposite view. IMO it's fine to attack another view, so long as you recognize on some level that it IS a valid argument. My way of showing it as valid is to attack it. If it weren't a real point, then there'd be no challenge
