It is acceptable for a 17-year-old girl and a 21-year-old man to date if they meet somewhere that age does not matter (work, church, etc.) Amirite?

Eh sort of. It depends on the maturity level. It's essentially like a senior dating a freshman in high school.

Not really. The younger you are the more quickly you're developing. The older you get the less age matters. Also to OP: what does where they met have to do with it? Unless you mean like the 21 year old bought the 17 year old a drink at a bar or something I guess.

Colebowl, I was wondering the same thing. I think OP just meant at a place where you wouldn't assume they were a certain age. Like, if a guy met a girl at a school, he could assume she went there and was underage.

I still think guys in their 20s, even early 20s, who date girls age 16 or 17 are creepy. Even if they live in the UK or somewhere where the legal age of consent is 16, they do seem predator like for going after school aged girls.

I dated a guy who was 21 when I was 17. He wasn't a predator or creepy, it wasn't like he went out looking for younger girls it just happened.

I guess not in every situation, just in general. Worse is when they "meet online". I just think, Dude, if you're in your 20s and chatting up 16 year old chicks on the Internet, you better work out your priorities. Find a woman your own age, and I'd you can't, maybe you better think why.

I'm not saying in every case, but I do find it odd and suspicious most of the time.

Also the type of dudes I'm talking about do it more than once. If a guy in his 20s goes for a 16 year old once, then I guess you could just say they had a lot in common, or it just happened, etc. but I know dudes who will hit on, like, two 16 year olds online at the same time, and promise them things. Even if they're over the age of consent, they're still kids, they're still minors. The whole thing is just creepy.

Lol, we did meet online. He felt weird about it sometimes but I never did. We were friends first (and we still are) so it wasn't like he was looking for a younger girl to chat up.

I didn't really mean to say that girls were gold diggers, I just think that some young girls believe older guys are 'cooler' than guys their own age, and so date guys in their 20s despite the fact that a 20 year old guy dating a younger girl is usually a bit creepy.

I know generalising a lot, just I'm a guy in my 20s and I've seen situation like this a lot at my college and among other wider friendship groups. I know there's plenty of situation of a guys in his 20s dating a school girl and it's alright, and I'm sorry if I've offended anyone here who has been in a relationship like that, but honestly, the majority of them are like I've described - a creepy guy dating a girl who's too young for him, and an immature school girl thinking that dating an older guy is cool and not seeing the reality.

Another thing - again, just in general based on my own observations and experiences, people say 'the girl is probably just mature for her age' - but I tend to find high school girls who date older guys tend to actually be IMMATURE for their age - the idea of an older boyfriend who can give them stuff guys their own age can't appeals to them, but they're not mature enough to see obvious warning signs. If they have similar mental/emotional maturity levels, it's because he's immature, not because she's mature.

I just think that until 18, kids should date within two years of their own age.

Ok I understand you're not saying in every situation but really that is not what happened in my case so why should I have had to wait until I was 18 to be seen as acceptable to date him? Anyway if they are over the age of consent then it's really up to to anyone else to decide who they should and shouldn't date.

Actually, in my state at least, the law says that when one of the couple is under 18, there must be three years or less of a difference. This means that it is illegal for a 17 year old to date a 21 year old and, if reported, the 21 year old could be charged with statutory rape even for just kissing.

I really disagree with Anon saying how the 21 year olds 'give you stuff that guys your age can't'. Really, not every girl is a golddigger...

The law is different where I live if you are over the age of 16 it doesn't matter the age gap as long as both parties consent, so everything was legal y smilie

I'm sad to hear a lot of guys are like that, as well as hearing a lot of girls buy it. I don't have similar experiences with myself or any of my friends (I am 22 myself now) and can only hope my daughter will be able to see through it (if I ever get children hehe)

Only if she's 17 AND A HALF (YYA'd because that's still considered 17). The rule is half your age, plus seven. It's universal. There is no rounding.

Dunno why I was downvoted. I was looking at it from the female's viewpoint. Since the post refers to a female of 17 I switched the equation. So although the girl is only half a year too young, the guy is a year too old.

or you could use the girl equation to see the oldest guy she can date: (her age x 2) - 14 = oldest she can date. Which in this case is 20.

My mom always told me, if a guy is dating a girl quite a bit younger than him, you have to ask yourself why he isn't dating a girl his own age. He must be a huge loser with a lot of insecurities. Teenage girls are impressed that an older guy has a car, a job, his own place. They are easy targets which is why they need to be protected. I think if you are 17, and someone who is of legal age is trying to get with you, it's the same as them trying to date a 12 year old. There are billions of people in the world, so there's enough people your own age to date while you are still legally a child. Dating an older guy doesn't make you "mature", it just makes him a pedophile.

Who cares how they met? If they're happy, leave them be. It's not much of an age difference anyway.

I'm 18 and my boyfriend is almost 24. We've been together for two and half years and are going strong. If the two individuals are mature, it shouldn't be a problem.

makeup_nerds avatar makeup_nerd Yeah You Are -1Reply

As long as they're consenting and mature adults I see no problem with it. My mother was 17 when she met my 24 year old father. Of course that was a long time ago and things were different

If it were a 17 year old guy and a 21 year old woman, no one would even take notice of it
