Example:
Friend: What's wrong? You've seemed kind of down lately.
Me: I've just been really busy, so I haven't been getting much sleep.
Friend: Over the last week I've gotten less than 9 hours of sleep.
Well that's just great. I didn't know this had turned into competition.
Andy, I don't think OP had the best example but if you say something like "I have a really bad headache" and then your friend starts talking about this really awful headache they had months ago, they're trying to 1-up you, not relate. Relating would be saying something like, "Oh yeah, I've been there." Not telling you how much worse they had it at some point.
I knew a girl that whenever we would say something about a headache or something like that, she would talk about a time she went to the hospital.
Seriously? All you make it sound like is that you want everyone to feel bad for you. To me that's more annoying than anything. All "friend" is doing is relating to you. If you can't tell the difference then you're going to lose good friends real quick.
If I feel shit about something, the absolute last thing I want to hear is someone undermining what I've been through to just so they can walk around with a smug grin.
All it does is benefit themselves by making me feel even worse so their ego can have a little boost.
If they're good friends then they'll probably share my point of view anyway.
If I had a bad day, and my friend tried to "one up" me with an even worse day I would be relieved that I'm not the only one who had a bad day. In fact, hearing his/her story would make me feel better, knowing he/she had an even worse day than I did.

I hate when this happend so. fucking. much.
In that case yeah but in the OP example it was within the same week.
*happens
Please tell me about your day
It's even worse when they try and three-up you
Or...they could tell you you deserved it.
