Calling somebody or something any of these things should be unacceptable.
Honestly I've never heard faggot used against gays badly, and the one time I did, it was a friend of mine who I shot down immediately for it. I dunno if it's about where I live or not, but faggot here is more like obnoxious or incredibly annoying. Can someone please tell me if they've ever heard it used badly?
I didn't say it should. I just don't understand the double standard.
I wouldn't consider it a double standard. I don't use the word retarded, gay, or faggot in negative ways, if I even use them.
I've heard more people flip out because someone called someone/thing "retarded" way more than "gay" or "faggot".
I think people are misunderstanding the post. i dont believe the OP is saying its okay to say 'faggot', i believe he means itsjust silly that its okay to say one and not the other. He means that all those words should not br allowed. I may be wrong..
I don't think that calling people/things retarded is exactly a good thing, but I think the reason that it's not on the same level as calling something gay is because we do not call mentally challenged people retarded anymore. Like as the person above me said, we can call things lame without offending people that have a bit of a limp or dumb without offending deaf people because those words don't really have that meaning anymore. Gay and faggot are still used as their main purpose to describe homosexuals, therefore that's why it's considered more unacceptable in our society to use that word in another way. I hope that at least sort of made sense.
It's definitely not okay to say "retard" at least where I live. At school, of you're caught saying it you get a major referral (which means automatic detention). There's a whole organization dedicated to it. Ever heard "Spread the Word to End the Word"?
Major Referral salutes
"Take the pledge to stop the R-word." same organization?
Obviously it's ridiculous, but I haven't heard of anyone finding the word gay unacceptable. "Gay" and "retarded" shouldn't be used offensively, only descriptively when referring to people who are respectively homosexual and mentally challenged. "Faggot" is usually pretty offensive, so it makes sense for it to be unacceptable. I agree it would be much better if people stopped referring to things they don't like as "retarded".
Where is using the word retarded acceptable? Calling someone retarded is just as bad as calling someone a faggot. Both are unnecessary and hurtful when in the wrong place.
Wait, like, two years ago they made it official that "retarded" was a a so-called "bad word." Didn't they? Or was my geometry teacher wrong? I don't know..
Your geometry teacher is retarded
That shit is so gay
What about lame nd dumb?!
Both lame and dumb started out as derogatory terms for people with disabilities. How is that any different than retarded? It isn't. The only difference is that we have become desensitized to those terms.
We have not become desensitized, the words are just used differently. When people say something is lame or dumb it means they are stupid. I think honestly, you are just oversensitive.
Two word I would use to describe your post.
I am not. I use lame, dumb, and retarded to mean stupid. I was commenting on the premise that the OP is oversensitive about the usage of the words retarded but is unaware of the origins of similarly used, previously derogatory terms.
Then I misunderstood what you were saying. Saying that in your first post could have prevented people like me thinking you were meaning something else.
Sorry. I have a bit of a communication problem. I seem to think that we are all telepathically linked or something. lol
Oh no problem, lol.
Why are you so passionate about this? Why is it necessary that you be allowed to say "faggot" without anyone getting offended?
He's not, he's asking why the word "retarded" is so widely accepted as an insult when really it should be just as unacceptable as the word "faggot"
Meh, I think people need to stop being butt-hurt about certain terms. The term would lost all power if you stop letting it affect you. Besides, this society has become far too much of a "let's coddle everyone and not step on anyone's toes" society.
It's not about coddling. It's about treating others with respect. Personally, I see nothing wrong with wanting everyone to simply be respectful.
fuck political correctness period, I'll say whatever I want.
There are many more examples but this is the first I thought of.
