It's ridiculous that saying "gay" or "faggot" is becoming unacceptable in our society, but calling things or people "retarded" is completely okay, amirite?

Calling somebody or something any of these things should be unacceptable.

Obviously it's ridiculous, but I haven't heard of anyone finding the word gay unacceptable. "Gay" and "retarded" shouldn't be used offensively, only descriptively when referring to people who are respectively homosexual and mentally challenged. "Faggot" is usually pretty offensive, so it makes sense for it to be unacceptable. I agree it would be much better if people stopped referring to things they don't like as "retarded".

I think people are misunderstanding the post. i dont believe the OP is saying its okay to say 'faggot', i believe he means itsjust silly that its okay to say one and not the other. He means that all those words should not br allowed. I may be wrong..

It's definitely not okay to say "retard" at least where I live. At school, of you're caught saying it you get a major referral (which means automatic detention). There's a whole organization dedicated to it. Ever heard "Spread the Word to End the Word"?

Really now? Both lame and dumb started out as derogatory terms for people with disabilities. How is that any different than retarded? It isn't. The only difference is that we have become desensitized to those terms.

I don't think that calling people/things retarded is exactly a good thing, but I think the reason that it's not on the same level as calling something gay is because we do not call mentally challenged people retarded anymore. Like as the person above me said, we can call things lame without offending people that have a bit of a limp or dumb without offending deaf people because those words don't really have that meaning anymore. Gay and faggot are still used as their main purpose to describe homosexuals, therefore that's why it's considered more unacceptable in our society to use that word in another way. I hope that at least sort of made sense.

Meh, I think people need to stop being butt-hurt about certain terms. The term would lost all power if you stop letting it affect you. Besides, this society has become far too much of a "let's coddle everyone and not step on anyone's toes" society.
