The best bands today aren't completely underground indie bands that only mega-hipsters listen to (The Antlers) or super mainstream bands that everyone knows (Maroon 5). Today's best bands are the ones that are somewhere in the middle (The Vaccines, The Black Keys, fun., etc...), amirite?
I don't think that the quality of a band can be judged based solely on their popularity.
I'm not saying the bands I listed were good because of their degree of popularity. I'm just saying that, in my opinion, the best bands are usually (not always) the ones that aren't completely underground, but also aren't completely mainstream.
Music is subjective. There are no best bands. Also, The Antlers (or at least Hospice) are pretty entry level at this point: they're definitely not for 'mega hipsters'.
Exactly what I was going to say. It's all opinion. If you ask me, the black keys are really meh.
Here's a radical idea: the best band is whichever band YOU like the best!
Fair enough. It's just that most people go, "BAND X IS THE BEST!!!! OH, YOU DON'T THINK SO?!? HAVE FUN BURNING IN HELL, YOU DONKEYFUCKER"
Well, I never said anything like that :(
I don't know why everyone is making the "everyone has different taste" argument. Of course everyone has different taste, this post describes my taste, and I wanted to see how many people had similar taste.
I realize that now :)
Super :)
I'm not saying it's true all the time. And I recognize that there might be some people who love The Antlers and Maroon 5, yet hate The Black Keys. I just wanted to see how many people on this site had similar taste in music to me.
In my personal opinion, YES.
I've found that GENERALLY bands that are extremely underground are trying too hard to be different (so hard that their music is just bizarre, confusing, and unpleasant to my ears) and bands that are too mainstream (Oh, gosh I sounds like a total hipster) sound too generic.
I love The Black Keys, fun., The Strokes, and other bands at about that level on the popularity scale.
I'm only familiar with Mumford & Sons (and I like them very much! :D), but I've heard of The Format (because of fun./Nate), though I haven't listened to them.
Have you by any chance heard of Noah & the Whale?
I do. :3 I think Neon Tree's new(ish) single sounds a lot like them.
What other bands do you like? :D
eels, Mumford & Sons, The Format, Jukebox The Ghost and many more :)
YAY except I don't really like the strokes but sill YAY
Guys, it's their opinion, of course it's subjective. I agree because I listen to a lot of middle ground artists and bands like that
This is unrelated: I like the OP's name compared to the post before it on the home page. I wonder if it was intentional?
It was! I changed it just so I could follow apackofwolves
The Antlers are also even more known than the Vaccines according to their last.fm stats, which is generally a pretty accurate measure of how many people listen to bands relative to another.
Try again.
Maybe The Antlers weren't the best example to use, but the point of the post still stands.
What about Panic! At the Disco? When they were in their prime during "A Fever You Can't Sweat Out", do you think they were too underground or too mega-hipsterish?
I didn't like AFYCSO. I thought Pretty Odd was awesome, but I don't like either of their other two albums. I don't really know how popular they were when Pretty Odd came out.
They lost some popularity when Ryan Ross and Jon Walker left the band after "Pretty. Odd" because Brendon Urie and Spencer Smith didn't agree to the music they were playing. Oh, and they have a third album which came out in March of 2011 called "Vices and Virtues". In all, I pretty much think they were one of those middle bands.
I listen to skinny puppy, nine inch nails etc. I also listen to stuff like the glee project, and the pretty reckless. I guess skinny puppy would probably go in the mega-hipster category, and tpr and nin would probably be more in the middle.
Also, I think you would've got more yyas if you had said "your favorite bands", not "the best bands"
Is Cage the Elephant a hipster band?
I don't really like them :(
To each his own
Yeah, I guess they are kind of mainstream. They're one of my favorite modern bands though.
I don't think so, but I guess they could be.
