+171 The concept of property tax is pretty assholish. You don't make money off your house, but the government says, "You know what? You could make 50K per year renting your place, so we're just going to go ahead and tax you as if you really were getting an extra 50K.", amirite?

does anyone think insurance is a little unfair too? you pay a bunch of money just in case something happens to you...shouldnt you get your money back if nothing happens?

No. Then the insurance companies would lose out, wouldn't they? They're private companies, and they are not legally required to give you insurance, nor are you legally required to get insurance specifically from them. Basically, it's gambling.

Of course it's fair. They provide a service and you pay for it. Their lives require money as well, let alone the cost of setting up an insurance company. The only way it wouldn't be fair is if you had no choice but to get it. It's fair, but it's a bad idea for society. It shifts the payment for the mediated commodity away from the direct consumer, and that lack of transparency plays havoc with the market.
