+156 Television news should have more goodnews. there should be a balance. There are good things happening too. instead of just terrifying people by showing them how bad the world is, add some happiness and give the world some hope... amirite?

This is true and I can't believe that the score is equal on YYA and NW as I'm posting this. Media is driven to tell bad news more because it sells more papers and attracts more viewers. Amazingly, the audience isn't as interested in good news, which is why the good stuff is tagged on the end of the bulletin in one of those "the lighter side of news" stories. The flip-side of the coin is though that you get news that tells you nothing but good things...but that's venturing into N Korea and China territory. hahaha. The OP is right, there needs to be more balance

Yeah and when i said balance, i didnt mean the votes. haha Thank you though. :) I cant imagine who sits there thinking 'No, his wrong, we love seeing rape, murder and corruption. Be gone with your good news business'. 'tis sad. :(

I NW'd because I think the news should show, well, news. If there's a ton of good stuff going on, they should show that. If there's a lot of bad stuff going on, they should show that. They shouldn't have to make it balanced; they should show what's happening.

Fair enough. :) There are good things happening though. Newspapers are better in the sense that they prove this. It's just that television news is all bad. In South Africa anyway and i know for a FACT that good things happen in SA too.

Of course the news should reflect the reality of the world we're living in, but at the moment all media is failing to do so on a massive scale. You have western media motivated by profits, filling the newspapers with either sensationalist or general bad news because it sells better. And you've got countries like China filling theirs with positive stuff. It's a total mess. The idea that the news now is just reporting what's going on is absolutely laughable.

If we were interested in good news, it would be on TV. We can't blame this only on the media - they're a reflection of us and our tastes.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

If they were,i would not have made this post. They are, perhaps, a reflection of many people and their tastes, but not all.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Although they can't please everyone, they reflect the tastes and viewpoints of their target audience in general.

(Laguakat):Tragedies make better news, true. However that fact is effing sad.

I agree. However, maybe it's a good thing, in a way, that tragedies make better news, because the more unusual something is, the better news it makes. So in general, good things happen more often, which is comforting, even if we don't realize that they do.

I like that viewpoint. haha

The good news stories are always my favorite–especially when members of the military come home from deployment and surprise their families. Those are the best stories.

This is true. The only problem with this, IMO, is that sometimes people do good things to get publicity, and I think that problem might increase if more of those good things were publicized. I'm afraid I'm rather cynical for that reason whenever I see good stuff in the news as opposed to when I see that kind of thing when I'm just out living my life. The bottom line is, truly good things that happen are ones that are under the media's radar.
