Rock A Bye Baby. I've thought that one was sadistic ever since I was little.
"When the bough breaks, the cradle will fall. Down will come baby, cradle and all."
Why is a song about a baby falling out of a tree to its death thought of as a song that lulls children to sleep?

Ring around the roses is such a beautiful children's song about people dying gruesome deaths from the Plague and people blocking the smell of their rotting bodies with roses.

so there is this song called:Old Mrs. Leary that we sing to the preschoolers at the daycare i work at, and the meaning of the lyrics disturb me. it goes
Late one night, when we were all in bed
old Mrs. Leary lit a lantern in the shed
and when the cow kicked it over, he winked his eye and said
its gonna be a hot time in the old town tonight
(then all the kids shout) FIRE FIRE FIRE!!!

It's raining; it's pouring.
The old man is snoring.
He went to bed and bumped his head,
And he couldn't get up in the morning.
Or at least I think that means he died.

When I was little, I thought "You Are My Sunshine" was about children being stolen from their mothers.
"You are my sunshine,
My only sunshine,
You make me happy when skies are grey.
You'll never know, dear,
How much I love you,
Oh, please don't take my sunshine away."
