Its just an inborn fear; our ancestors feared spiders with good reason, so even though most house spiders won't kill us, we're inclined to be afraid. I've been terrified of spiders as long as I can remember and there was no specific event that brought it out, its just always been there.

My boyfriend is 6'6" ex-army and terrified of spiders, so any time there is one in the house I have to deal with it, I just put them outside because I like spiders.
