+198 You're always a little stunned when somebody goes through life never learning to understand sarcasm. "Yeah, I just LOVE when we get too much homework." "Hm. Well, everybody has their own opinions." Amirite?

There is actually a part of our brains that works with understanding, including understanding sarcasm. So if it's damaged, like for many autistic patients, they have much difficulty understanding sarcasm. So that area could be damaged in some people...

I have a friend who is like this, and since I'm very sarcastic, she always gives me these weird looks. For example, once it was pouring miserably, so I went 'what a lovely day', and she just said 'I always knew you were weird'

She may have been being sarcastic too but was less obvious about it. I do that. If someone makes an annoyingly obvious sarcastic remark I'll pretend I believe them or just ignore their sarcasm altogether. I only play along if they're smart about it (I'm not sure if that makes sense). If it's raining and someone says "It's a lovely day" and I know they don't enjoy rain, I'll ignore their sarcasm and continue the conversation. I may be reading too much into it, but when someone uses obnoxiously obvious sarcasm, it seems condescending to me. I don't know... maybe I just take things too seriously.

I know what you mean. I do that too, but no, she never ever gets sarcasm or even jokes. Do you think saying 'lovely day' is annoyingly obvious?

I guess it would depend on the tone you used when you said it. If you put a lot of emphasis on it or you said it really loudly or something then it may have been annoying but if you said it casually then it probable wasn't.
