how's that sad? That's the point of marriage. It's like the ultimate symbol that you two will always be together.
At least, it would be if divorce wasn't so common...

I don't know of any scenario where one is getting married to prove to other people that he/she is committed....

Okay... but then everyone thinking that can, as I told you to do, refer to the first comment, and then they will know of a scenario in which that happens.

It should be. I've got nothing against getting married to show your partner you're committed. I think it's sad for your primary objective in getting married to be showing your parents, friends, etc. that you're committed. Not that that can't be a secondary benefit, but it shouldn't be your number one reason.

See, there's the point. A marriage is not a commitment. You can be committed without being married, and divorce shows that you can be committed without being married. A marriage should be because you love each other, and want to be married, not because you want to make other people who are not in your relationship think that the two of you are committed to each other. Who cares about what other people think? A marriage should be for the two partners, not anyone else.

Typically, people don't want to seem committed to each other if they don't love each other.

I thought of this when watching I Found the Gown, when a bride said she was marrying her fiance because they were trying to adopt a child, and hoped getting married would help them in the adoption process by showing they were committed to each other.

It actually does make sense. Adoption is extremely difficult. I also watched that episode, and I thought she seemed pretty in love anyways, they'd been dating for a while.

Yeah, that makes a lot of sense. Adoption agencies are far more likely to give a child to a couple that's married rather than two people who are just dating.

That just seems like a bad reason to me. They're not getting married because they want to be married, they're doing it so someone will give them a kid.

Yes, because of how you said "other people". It shouldn't matter what other people think about your relationship

Why would people want to get married other than to show off their commitment to other people? You can be committed without getting married, but you get married so everyone else can see you're committed (forget about religious reasons, healthcare benefits, etc.)

You're right. Marriage is a stupid thing, it shows nothing. No commitment, no love, nothing. People should just eradicate it. [enter sarcasm]

That's not at all what I said. I didn't say marriage doesn't show commitment, just that two people should not get married because of what other people think. Who cares what anyone else thinks? They're not marrying you.
