That would be funny. It's kinda like jury duty. I think the real way they do it is look at what animals eat because most foods that are safe for animals are safe for humans.
Taste and smell. If it smells like food, they taste it. If it tastes like food, they continue to eat it. If someone dies, then everyone knows not to eat it anymore. Whoever found it gets to try it is my guess. But most things that aren't meant to be ate have an unpleasant taste to ward of predators. Ex: chili pepper. But people still eat them because the pain releases endorphin and after exposure to the taste, one can grow to like it and actually feel pleasure from eating spicy foods.
