+168 It's not fair that some people can't forgive James for being a jerk when he was a kid, but can forgive Snape for being a Death Eater who once called Lily a mudblood. amirite?

People often refer to side characters in the same way that the main character refers to them. People remember when Harry thought lowly of his father for being an asshole, because that was the most memorable thing about his father in the series. Similarly, the most memorable thing about Snape was that he became a new man and helped Harry Potter to the end, and once Harry realized this, so did the audience, and the audience felt bad for name-dropping him.

It's ridiculous how seriously people invest in fiction.

YES BUT JAMES NEVER MADE UP FOR BEING A JERK LIKE THE WAY SNAPE DEVOTED HIS LIFE TO AVENGING LILY.

Yeah, not like James died protecting Lily and Harry that night or anything...

I mean, yeah, that was noble, but it still didn't make anything up to the way he treated Snape.

I agree it didn't make up for the fact that he treated Snape like crap when he was a kid, but the thing is, he was just a teenager and I can attest that kids do dumb things when they're teenagers and egos can get in the way. Despite this though I think as an adult James matured greatly. He's shown being a good father and husband in flashbacks, and while a douche to Snape as a kid, he was kind to his friends his entire life. Snape in his later youth went on to become a death eater and even called the 'love of his life' the worst slur in the wizarding world. Yes, he redeemed himself by protecting Harry, but that was more for Lily's sake than anything. Fundamentally James was good, he just had an ego, similar to Harry if you think about it.

People say that Snape is better than James because James was a bully when he was a kid and picked on someone his own age, but when Snape was a grown man, he bullied an eleven year old over the death of his parents.
