Homeless shelters don't give enough food , per serving, and the food they serve isn't healthy, amirite?

Beggars can't be choosers, I guess.
by Anonymous12 years ago

Oh c'mon, not all homeless shelters are like this.
by Anonymous12 years ago
which one do you go to? where did you eat today?
by Anonymous12 years ago
Personally, I don't //eat// at any of them. However I do volunteer at the Toronto daily bread food bank and the families and individuals who come in for a meal are encouraged to take as much as they want. And in my opinion, I don't think salad, fruits & veggies and sometimes meat is unhealthy.
Now, which food bank did //you// go to ? Which shelter failed to accommodate your stomache ?
by Anonymous12 years ago
A salvation Army in vancouver area , we didn't have a stomache. we aren't sick . just poor .they serve 90 percent carbs, no fresh vegs, usually no fruit or veg at all. extremely tiny portions of meat. there are no second helpings. you get a small portion on a plate and that is it.

P>S> there is no food bank in this community, the place you work sounds great, I suppose a big city like Toronto has alot more resources.
by Anonymous12 years ago
Well, I hope I have given you some insight towards the differences of homeless shelters. Generalizing all of them is not fair, and it pretty much disregards the hard work volunteers put in to make their local food banks functional.
by Anonymous12 years ago
we went to some shelters in the more urban areas around here and boy were they scary !!! yikes... a girl was raped in the can, and drugs everywhere and needles...
and by the way In the OP i did not mention Food Banks, which are great, we used to go to one where we used to live, it was really nice and clean and friendly, thanks for your help in your community I am sure it helps a lot of people. :)
by Anonymous12 years ago
At least they are getting food..
by Anonymous12 years ago
I love how OP is complaining about the free food he got by using his phone/laptop/tablet/whatever and an internet connection...
by Anonymous12 years ago
In all fairness they could be at a library.
by Anonymous12 years ago
library offers public computers and internet comnnection
we were not complaining about the food, merely observing
by Anonymous12 years ago
I'm sure if they had more money to buy healthier food, and larger proportions of food they'd be better able to serve people. It would also help if people could donate more.
by Anonymous12 years ago
probably
by Anonymous12 years ago
Not all shelters get the funding they need, otherwise I'm sure they would get higher quality food. I know it can be frustrating, but try to be thankful that you can at least get something. :)
by Anonymous12 years ago
we sure are ! we were merely making observations
by Anonymous12 years ago
You know you live in the first world when people go //online// to complain about the things they got for absolutely free at the expense of complete strangers giving up their time, food and money being unsatisfactory.
by Anonymous12 years ago
yeah, going online in this day and age is soooooo strange
by Anonymous12 years ago
It's good how well you understand things that are said.
by Anonymous12 years ago
I'm sure they're doing their best with what they've got
by Anonymous12 years ago
yes we are trying to , but it is hard without mom here now..
thanks for your compassion
by Anonymous12 years ago
Yeah, it's the shelter's fault that they have too many homeless people and not enough food.
by Anonymous12 years ago
At the homeless shelter in my area they are given three home cooked meals each day and once everyone has gone through the the line seconds are given out until they're gne.
by Anonymous12 years ago
So go to the store and buy them top quality food.
by Anonymous12 years ago
I sure wish we could, believe me, being the only kids amongst a lot of smelly old men that reek of urine and junkies isn't that fun.
after my mom died and my dad lost his job, due to taking care of mom, things haven't quite been normal.
by Anonymous12 years ago
They're trying to give you some food so you can survive, not fulfill your nutritional needs..
by Anonymous12 years ago
thanks for the tip. appreciate
by Anonymous12 years ago
Something tells me there isn't enough money to go around for homeless shelters to provide three-course, A-grade meals to everyone who wanders in...and something else tells me people that eat in a homeless shelter won't be too picky about it
by Anonymous12 years ago
after my mom died and things all went to shit , yeah your right i am getting blasted for this post, i guess it;s my fault. its just that at school we have to learn all this stuff about nutrition and then i thought some vegetables might be a good choice, instead of carbs carbs and more carbs...
by Anonymous12 years ago
I think also the point may be to give you guys more calorie dense, filling yet cheap food. Assuming the food they give you there is all that you get, it's better to give you something that will keep you fuller, longer. I know I feel more satisfied and full longer when I eat something like pasta, versus a salad.
by Anonymous12 years ago
What kind of carbs are they giving you? Are they easily digested simple carbs or complex carbs that give you lasting energy throughout the day?
